Healthy Chocolate Hazelnut Granola

What I love about homemade granola is that I get to pick nutritious ingredients and control the sugar levels and flavors! Whenever I need a comforting breakfast or an on-the-go snack, this is my go-to chocolate hazelnut granola recipe with a slight orange flavor.

Chocolate and orange are a match made in heaven. I use this combo every time I get the chance, like in this easy 4-ingredient chocolate spread. To enjoy this irresistible flavor combination, I make this orange-flavored chocolate granola recipe that you can enjoy for days!

This easy chocolate hazelnut granola is crunchy, bright, perfectly sweet, and packed with flavor and nutrients from the hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, and dates. It’s incredibly healthy, delicious, and so aromatic. Your house will smell amazing!

Best enjoyed with a bowl of your favorite plant-based milk or yogurt. What else can we ask for on a cold or rainy morning? I also love to add it to fruit salads, parfaits, smoothies, oatmeal, and even ice cream! Late night snack? This healthy homemade chocolate granola by itself is the perfect afternoon snack.

Ingredients:


3 cups old fashioned oats

1 mashed banana

½ cup maple syrup (or any other liquid sweetener)

¼ cup melted coconut oil

½ cup hazelnuts

½ cup dates

⅓ sunflower seeds

2 tsp orange extract (or 2 tsp orange zest)

3 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder

½ tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp vanilla extract

¼ tsp salt

¼ cup dark chocolate

¼ cup shredded coconut

2 tbsp brown sugar (optional)


Directions:


  1. Preheat the oven at 400 F.

  2. Roughly chop the dates and dark chocolate.

  3. In a large bowl, mash the banana with a fork and add maple syrup, coconut oil, orange extract or orange zest, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, salt, and cocoa powder. Mix well.

  4. To the same bowl, add the oats, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, dates, and brown sugar (optional). Mix well.

  5. Lightly grease a baking dish with coconut oil, pour the mixture, and spread evenly.

  6. Cook in the oven for 30 min. Stir halfway until browned.

  7. Let it cool completely before adding the shredded coconut and dark chocolate pieces.


Notes:


- Store in airtight containers or mason jars at room temperature. Enjoy poured on oatmeal, smoothies, or as an afternoon snack!

- For a deeper orange flavor, I used Theo Orange Dark Chocolate.

*Oats are packed with a variety of vitamins and nutrients. They’re rich in carbs and fiber and higher in protein and fat than other grains. Oats are also high in a soluble fiber called beta-glucan, which helps reduce cholesterol and promotes healthy gut bacteria.


*Cocoa powder: A study analyzed the evidence to date that flavanols (found in dark chocolate and cocoa, among other foods) may benefit human brain function. Flavanols are plant-based substances that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Also, studies show that cocoa lowers blood pressure and improves blood vessel function.


*Dates are high in fiber, which may be beneficial for preventing constipation and controlling blood sugar. They provide several antioxidants, including flavonoids, carotenoids, and phenolic acid. Dates may also be helpful with lowering inflammation and preventing plaques from forming in the brain, which is important for preventing Alzheimer’s disease.


*Sunflower seeds are excellent sources of several nutrients — including vitamin E and selenium — and beneficial plant compounds that can help prevent chronic diseases. Sunflower seeds contain nutrients and plant compounds that help reduce your risk of inflammation, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
